The performance and service life of seismic bracing systems largely depend on raw materials and component selection. Many engineers and procurement staff struggle to pick suitable seismic supports for different application environments, pipe specifications and load requirements. Improper material selection will not only reduce the bearing capacity, but also cause rust, deformation and other failures in a short time. Combined with NFPA 13, FM and UL certification standards, this article systematically introduces the key points for selecting seismic bracing materials, accessories and strut channels. We also share practical selection tips for different working conditions, helping you make a reasonable choice efficiently.
Carbon steel is the most widely used material for seismic bracing products. It features high mechanical strength, stable bearing performance and cost-effectiveness. Standard carbon steel products can meet the load demands of most indoor commercial and industrial projects. To enhance anti-rust ability, carbon steel parts are usually processed with electro-galvanizing or hot-dip galvanizing.
QT450 ductile iron is adopted for key stressed fittings such as pipe clamps and beam clamps. It has better toughness and impact resistance than ordinary carbon steel. Under frequent seismic vibration, it is not easy to crack or deform, so it is the preferred material for heavy-load seismic connection parts. Most FM and UL certified heavy-duty bracing components choose QT450 ductile iron.
Stainless steel seismic bracing is specially designed for harsh environments including coastal areas, chemical workshops and high-humidity spaces. It has excellent corrosion resistance and never rusts in long-term use. Its overall strength is slightly lower than carbon steel, and the price is relatively higher, so it is recommended for special working conditions only.
When selecting pipe clamps and hangers, you must match the nominal diameter of the pipeline. Small-diameter fire sprinkler pipes and large-diameter industrial pipes correspond to different clamp models and load levels. Meanwhile, check whether the rubber lining is needed for shock absorption and noise reduction.

Bolts, nuts and shear bolts are the connecting core of the whole system. All fasteners must be matched with the main body of the bracing, and the strength grade shall not be lower than the standard required by NFPA 13. Spring nuts and wing nuts for strut channels need to select corresponding specifications according to channel sizes.
Lateral hinges, longitudinal connectors and other seismic fittings are divided by load grade. Light-duty types are for ordinary pipelines, while heavy-duty types are for large pipes and duct systems. Do not mix light and heavy accessories randomly, otherwise the overall seismic performance will be reduced.
Strut channels are the main supporting frame of seismic systems, and UTT series strut channels are widely recognized in the industry. Different sizes and wall thicknesses correspond to different load capacities and application scenarios.
Thin-walled strut channels (1.5mm-2.0mm): Suitable for light loads such as small sprinkler pipes and cable trays
Medium-walled strut channels (2.0mm-2.5mm): The most versatile type, for conventional MEP pipelines
Thick-walled & double jointed strut channels: For heavy equipment and large-diameter main pipes
For conventional office buildings, shopping malls and factory interiors, choose electro-galvanized carbon steel products. The cost is moderate, and the performance fully meets NFPA 13 and inspection requirements. Standard UTT single strut channels and common accessories are enough.
Outdoor pipe racks, basements and humid workshops require hot-dip galvanized products. The thick zinc layer can resist rain and moisture erosion effectively, extending the service life.
Chemical plants, seaside projects must use stainless steel or high-standard hot-dip galvanized products to prevent salt fog and chemical corrosion.
