Service condition | Required form / action | Clause |
Load magnitude and direction, displacement, temperature, insulation, pipe material | Determine suitable support type from these working conditions | (1) |
General piping | Prioritize standard pipe shoes, clamps and hangers; adopt welded type wherever feasible | (2)(11) |
Carbon steel pipe with medium ≥ 400℃; low-temperature pipe; alloy steel pipe; frequent disassembly; difficult overhead welding; non-metallic lined pipe | Do not use welded shoes/hangers — clamp-type products instead | (2)①–⑥ |
High-speed vent at valve outlet; vibration-prone two-phase flow; long span between fixed supports; leakage risk at flanges | Fit guide pipe shoes so displacement stays axial only | (3)①–④ |
Overhead pipeline with thermal expansion over 100 mm | Use extended pipe shoes to prevent detachment at bends | (4) |
Steel equipment requiring heat treatment; alloy equipment | Fit pad plates; match pad plate to equipment base material | (5) |
Heavy-load supports on equipment or civil platforms | Pre-coordinate positions, elevations and bearing loads with other disciplines | (6) |
Locations where pipe displacement must be constrained | Install limit stops | (7) |
Piping with vertical displacement | Spring supports and hangers; springs in parallel or series | (8) |
Vertical displacement with allowable supporting-force variation within 6% | Constant spring supports and hangers | (9) |
No applicable type in standard pipe support drawings | Custom special supports and hangers may be adopted | (10) |
Low-height supports inside operator access zones | Eliminate triangular supports or replace them with hangers | (13) |
Pipelines requiring frequent disassembly | Avoid welded constructions | (13) |
(1) When selecting pipe supports and hangers, suitable types shall be determined according to the magnitude and direction of loads at support points, pipe displacement characteristics, operating temperature, presence of thermal or cold insulation, pipe material and other working conditions.
(2) Standard pipe shoes, pipe clamps and pipe hangers shall be prioritized in design. Compared with clamp-type products, welded pipe shoes and hangers consume less steel, feature simple fabrication and easy field installation. Welded pipe shoes and hangers shall be adopted whenever feasible, except for the following scenarios:
① Carbon steel pipelines with internal medium temperature ≥ 400℃;
② Low-temperature pipelines;
③ Alloy steel pipelines;
④ Pipelines requiring frequent disassembly and maintenance during operation;
⑤ Overhead pipelines with difficult on-site welding;
⑥ Non-metallic lined pipelines.
(3) Guide pipe shoes shall be installed for pipelines under the following conditions to limit excessive lateral displacement and potential impact loads, ensuring axial-only displacement of the pipeline:
① High-speed vent pipelines at valve outlets and vibration-prone two-phase flow pipelines;
② Pipelines whose excessive lateral displacement may interfere with adjacent piping;
③ Pipelines with long spans between fixed supports, which are subject to lateral instability risks;
④ Pipelines where excessive lateral displacement is prohibited to prevent leakage at flanges and unions.
(4) Extended pipe shoes shall be used for overhead pipelines with thermal expansion over 100 mm to prevent pipe shoes from detaching at pipe bends.
(5) When supports are anchored on heat-treatment-required steel equipment, pad plates shall be fitted on the equipment. If the equipment is made of alloy material, the pad plate shall match the base material of the equipment.
(6) For heavy-load supports anchored on equipment or civil platforms, their installation positions, elevations and bearing loads shall be pre-coordinated with relevant disciplines.
(7) Limit stops shall be installed at locations where pipe displacement needs to be constrained.
(8) Spring supports and hangers can be selected for piping with vertical displacement; springs can be arranged in parallel or series to meet site-specific requirements.
(9) Constant spring supports and hangers shall be used for piping systems with vertical displacement at support points, where the allowable variation of supporting force is within 6%.
(10) Custom special supports and hangers may be adopted if no applicable types are available from standard pipe support drawings.
(11) On the premise of guaranteed service performance, standard pipe supports and standardized components shall be preferred to reduce the variety of custom non-standard supports.
(12) The selected support and hanger types shall be compatible with piping materials, anchoring substrates and heat treatment requirements.
(13) Supports and hangers shall be designed for easy pipe disassembly and maintenance, convenient construction, without obstructing operation and walkways. Where supports are installed at low heights within operator access zones, triangular supports shall be eliminated or replaced with hangers. Welded constructions shall be avoided for pipelines requiring frequent disassembly.
