Seismic bracings are mainly divided into two core types: lateral bracing and longitudinal bracing, in accordance with NFPA 13 and U.S. building codes. Most mechanical engineers and installers often confuse these two installation types during on-site layout, which may lead to construction failures and inspection non-compliance.
Lateral and longitudinal supports bear forces in different directions during an earthquake. Selecting the correct fittings directly determines the overall seismic performance of the entire piping system. This article elaborates on their definitions, load characteristics, installation differences, applicable piping systems and certified matching components to help you design bracing layouts properly.View lateral & longitudinal seismic bracing accessories.
Lateral bracing is installed perpendicular to the flow direction of pipes or ducts. It is designed to restrict horizontal side-to-side movement caused by seismic shocks. Seismic waves push pipes left and right, and lateral supports limit lateral displacement, preventing pendulum-style vibration that could rupture pipe joints. This is the most widely used bracing type for fire sprinkler systems, HVAC and general piping in all U.S. projects.
Longitudinal bracing is installed parallel to the pipe centerline to resist front-and-rear axial tension. Without qualified longitudinal bracing, pipes will stretch or compress along their axis under seismic load, resulting in pipe rupture and leakage. Four-way seismic bracing requires both lateral and longitudinal fittings installed near the same anchor point. View four-way seismic bracing products.
Lateral bracing is generally installed at an angle of 45° ~ 90° relative to the pipe, while most in-line longitudinal connectors are designed for installation angles of 30° ~ 60°. The allowable load of each FM & UL certified fitting decreases as the installation angle becomes smaller, which must be calculated during design.
NFPA 13 sets clear limits on the maximum spacing between adjacent bracings. For small-diameter sprinkler pipes, lateral bracing normally requires a shorter installation spacing than longitudinal bracing. Improper spacing is one of the main reasons for inspection rejection in commercial buildings across the United States.
